Vice Minister Yu Guangzhou and Mr. Michael Frendo, Malta’s Foreign Minister, co-chaired the 7th session of China-Malta Economic and Trade Joint Committee in Beijing on May 25.
Yu appraised China-Malta relations and bilateral economic and trade cooperation. He pointed out that the bilateral relations developed smoothly in recent years under the concern and promotion of leaders of the two countries. China highly appraised Malta’s position of keeping close communication and cooperation as well as before entering EU. It was expected that Malta could play a more active role inside EU to promote EU’s recognition of China’s full market economy status soon.
Yu expressed that the cooperation in 2006 gained significant achievements that the bilateral trade amounted to 826 million USD, up by 35% year-on-year. There were Great potential of cooperation on communication and high-tech field between the two countries. China’s government vigorously encouraged Chinese enterprises to invest in Malta. It was expected to keep expanding trade and investment henceforth, widen cooperative fields, boost various kinks of cooperation, and jointly develop market of the third country. They should also play the role of negotiation mechanism of the committee, and vigorously promote common concerned industries and enterprises. Malta’s enterprises were warmly welcomed to participate in all expositions and exhibitions held by China.
Mr. Michael Frendo expressed that Malta satisfied with the development of bilateral relations and bilateral trade and economic cooperation, and appreciated China’s grant aid. Malta would actively promote EU’s recognition of China’s full market economy status and expected to strengthen cooperation on sea transportation, tourism, energy resource, medical care and education.
Mr. Yu and Mr. Frendo signed trade and economic agreements after the meeting.
